	‘Everything I have is Yours / Tutt chill che teng è la Tu: Peaces, Debt and Inheritance in a Southern Italian Orchard’ started as an essay on the afterlives (Hartman 2008) of Italy’s mezzadria and became a poetics of absence, belonging and artistic research practice.&#38;nbsp;

It sediments six years of going research into the cutlure, memory and history of Italian sharecroppers into a conversation about archives, imagination, rewilding and belonging as a relational practice.

		<description>
	“Colonialism, in both its settler and imperial formations, refuses to be consigned to the past. Heated debates over representation, remembrance, restitution, and reparation—over social justice—have compelled museums and other public institutions to face their complicity in both historical and contemporary forms of colonialism.
This book examines this reckoning and studies museums—and heritage more broadly—as sites of contestation and transformation spurred by the practices of artists and activists. The reckoning is both transforming the museum as a public institution and shifting public and political debates about what to do with the afterlives of colonialism.”

“Building on interviews with curators, cultural practitioners, activists, and artists, as well as the authors’ ongoing involvement with movements aimed at decolonizing museums, this volume explores how antiracist activism and artivism have transformed museums, as well as the broader social and political significance of these transformations.”&#38;nbsp;Decolonizing the Museum (2026)

	Chiara De Cesari is Professor of Heritage, Memory, and Cultural Studies and Chair of Cultural Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research explores how forms of memory, heritage, art, and cultural politics are shifting under conditions of transnationalism, postcoloniality, and decoloniality. She is particularly concerned with the ways in which colonial legacies live on today, especially in museums and cultural institutions. She is the author of Heritage and the Cultural Struggle for Palestine (2019) and co-editor of two key volumes in memory studies (European Memory in Populism, Routledge, 2019; Transnational Memory, de Gruyter, 2014). Committed to transnational and transdisciplinary collaboration, she has been and is involved in several major international research projects, connecting universities across the globe with different social partners, museums, and cultural institutions.

		<description>
	This second iteration of the pastaworkshop was a more complex idea. Inspired (as always) by others and by grandmothers, the biggest inspiration this time around was the decades long work of the Cervi Institute in Gattatico (IT).
Our aim was to share the archives of Italian resistance that some of us had been working on, while mixing that with some anarchival methods and participatory approaches to collective singing and song learning. We also thought this might be a fun way to learn what it takes to organise as organisers: how can five people coming from different places get together for the first time ever and create an event that feeds, sings and shares stories with forty people - all in the space of one week?The short answer is: with a lot of work, and a couple of mental breakdowns.&#38;nbsp;You can check out the results below. The long answer was presented by Liza Prins and I at the 2025 conference of the American Association for Italian Studies with a paper called “Singing Resistance: Performance-Based Approaches to Italian Studies”.

Oh, it took a lot of money also. For this, we thank all the funding bodies who awarded us their support:
-&#38;nbsp;The Centre for Advanced Studies in Languages and Cultures (CASiLaC) at UCC;
- The EuropeanCreative Connections Fund through UCC’s College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (CACSS);- The money of the 2024 Faculty of Humanities Thesis Prize, given to my work, The Magical Atlas of Italian Sharecropping.
We couldn’t have fed all these people without you.&#38;nbsp;

The pastaworkshop was a simple idea inspired by the work of many others (grandmothers, good friends, DAAS alumni and participants).
Its aim wasto evoke the ‘art of the hands’, tacit knowledge that survives inside our bodies for generations and resurfaces when we try to do something like cooking traditional recipes in absurd quantities, but without really knowing how.&#38;nbsp;
It involved 10 kg of flour, 90 eggs and a whole neighborhood. We worked from 11am to 8pm and taught each other how to make pasta as we went along.

		<description>

The Magical Atlas of Italian Sharecropping, has been described as a ‘groundbreaking academic work’ by the University of Amsterdam’s Thesis Prize Jury, which awarded it with the 2024 Faculty of Humanities Thesis Prize.&#38;nbsp;They say about the Atlas: 'the combination of lived experience of the researcher whose own family history is unraveled and in practice-based research creates a sparkling account. To embed a personal yet academically rigorous voice in a range of academically dense issues, including theoretical approaches round the subaltern, re-enchantment, the archive, the postdigital, and hauntology, is highly impressive.'

 In its little, this project was an attempt at countering the extractive mode of knowledge production that gleans information from lived experiences and their spatial realm (often times in rural communities the field, the home or the kitchen) and encloses it within the archives’ boxes and walls.
The aim is to invert this flow of information - from the archive back to the kitchens where the knowledge of everyday things such as harvest cycles was extracted from.

In collaboration with a local weaver and a team of designers, the Magical Atlas developed into a collection of four handwoven kitchen towels inspired by Abruzzese peasant life and cosmology.

The Magical Atlas of Italian Sharecropping employs a research method based on microhistory to study the illiterate sharecropping communities of Southern Italy. The result is an attempt to explore the potential of storytelling methodologies in creatively
activating existing spatial or institutional archives.Developed in a close relationship with the local community of ‘I Colli’ in Pescara, Italy, the Magical Atlas used reciprocal storytelling as a method for socially engaged artistic practice, creating a relationship between the community and the archives that ‘studied’ them.The research articulates itself in three chapters: the Home, the Kitchen and the Field. &#38;nbsp;

The Home
	Looking for strategies to deal with grief led me to a spatial examination of the sharecropping house in which my mother grew up.
Understanding this home as an archive of my mother’s lived experience, I use the work of Jacques Derrida and Antonio Gramsci (among others) to theorise on its significance as a locus of analysis. Walking a virtual path between that home and our family house, I interrogate the extent of sharecropping’s violence as an agricultural practice through the evidence provided by its spatial design.
Sharecropping was outlawed in Italy in 1982. Until then, it was possible for a family to work on a land that belonged to another, in a home they did not own, and not receive any payment. Instead of rent, sharecroppers gave landowners half of the harvest.&#38;nbsp;
The house is now abadanoned. Trespassing into its property is an offence. My virtual visits were a first attempt to examine my heritage from a distance.&#38;nbsp;
	This research has evolved into a storytelling practice based on my findings.
Aided by powerpoint slides and video material, I tell stories about sharecropping and my family. Telling these stories is a form of remembrance: everytime, I invite the audience to join me in a collective celebration of the demise of Italian sharecropping.

my aunt Maria facing the Atlas, September 2023

From this intergenerational exchange, the idea of a second atlas was born: a digital infrastructure connected to the tangible, material collection of the teatowels.The Magical Atlas of Italian Sharecropping is not an archive. It does not seek to reproduce a sentimentalising image of Abruzzo’s peasants.
Rather, taking inspiration from Alfred North Whitehead and the SenseLab created by Massumi and Manning at Concordia University, its aim is that of working as a postdigital ‘anarchive’: a transmedial repertoire of knowledge and stories that works not through transparency, but towards the temporary definition of a space that opens “to that which has been obscured or excluded”, and in which technologies and techniques of the archive are pushed to a threshold where “they too are transformed by the world in process”.

The KitchenTeatowels become a tool for the intergenerational transmission of knowledge among surviving descendants of Italian sharecroppers. Co-opting the consumerist tradition of souvenir teatowels, they represent a different heritage than the hegemonic idea of the Italian nation advanced by popular souvenirs.The two Atlases are connected by a QR code that allows curious users to access the platform. While the textile atlas hopes to stimulate intergenerational knowledge transmission by bringing back symbols and cycles of peasant life into the home and the kitchen, the digital atlas tends to alienated communities that no longer have the opportunity to learn about the heritage from previous generations. How to imagine our past then?
 The souvenir becomes a way to critically engage with Italian heritage, highlighting the kitchen’s historical role as a political space.

The Field
This field, which lies in front of my family home in Pescara (IT), belongs to the same family of landowners that kept my grandparents on their land as sharecroppers.It has been uncultivated for 40 years.&#38;nbsp;

 Occasionally, women like my grandmother would forage wild asparagus on it. Others take their dogs on a walk. In 2022, I began filming the field and the way locals interact with it: planting a garden with succulents and basil, hunting for snails after the rain.&#38;nbsp;

During my&#38;nbsp; year as a member of the ‘Al Masha - Rural Commons’ postgraduate studies programme offered by DAAS at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm I developed the first steps of artistic research path on this field in 2024.

		<description>

The Decolonising Architecture Art Research programme is a one-year posgraduate research trajectory for practice based researchers in architecture and the arts.
Through experimental research-shares, communal assemblies, and critical approaches to permaculture, architecture, and artistic practice, we investigated the theme of rural commons.&#38;nbsp;

As a participant of DAAS, I deepened my ongoing study of Italian mezzadria through my interest in the social and physical architectures that shaped the rural landscape of Pescara Colli (IT).&#38;nbsp;Through the identification of a main concept, and a site, I delved into the history of my mother’s neighborhood by foraging with her, and experimented with a ritual bread making as a sharing of embodied knowledge and memory through ritual.&#38;nbsp;
Below, some excerpts of that research.&#38;nbsp;

Campo Paradiso (2023), Kitchen Installation by the Infrastructure Group. Ph. Marta Pagliuca Pelacani.Comparàtico
	comparàtico s. m. [der. of compare] (pl. -ci). – 1. a. The bond of spiritual cognation that binds the compari or comari (comrades?) of the baptism and christening to their godchildren, and the wedding witnesses to the newly weds. b. The spiritual relationship that two people of usually opposing genders contract following several popular rites (especially in Calabria) on the day of St. John the Baptist (24th June). 2. The ensemble of rituals in which traditionally different categories of ‘compari’ take part.

Author’s Translation

“comparàtico s. m. [der. di compare] (pl. -ci).

Enciclopedia Treccani &#38;nbsp;

According to Raffaele Corso, who generously filled in a page of the Enciclopedia Traccani on this matter, the comparàtico is a word through which several obligations associated to the role of being someone’s compare (masc.) or comare (fem.) can be categorised. Despite this attempt at ratification, being someone’s compare or comare can mean entirely different things depending on how the choice of taking up this role was made.
One can be a comare di nozze, a bridesmaid, meaning they will walk the bride to the altar, put the ring on her finger, accompany her to her new home, and gift her something valuable. They can also be a compare di battesimo, meaning a godfather, and they will take part in the Christian rite and take care of the child should this become orphaned. But one can also become a comare by cutting a baby’s first hair or nails, or by piercing their ears for the first time. And although Corso reminds us that the rituals that bind the invisible but tangible ties of comparàtico vary in Italy from region to region, and even village to village, it is clear from his account as from our experience that the meaning of comparàtico is that of an informal institution of community-life akin to the idea of an elected family.
Through the choices that institute the relationship of comparàtico, members of a community take agency over the structures that influence their daily lives. They decide which members of their families and friend group might be able to take care of their child, and who they can trust near their newborn with a sharp scorching needle. To bind oneself to another person in this way means claiming back agency over the way our relations are structured by way of imagination, magic and poetics. It is a simple act of survival and also a celebration of that texture of life that produced us already as a common subject. The slow rhythms of Abruzzo’s comparàtico rituals, performed across a whole night and day, are a form of anachronistic resistance: herbs are foraged and exposed to the moonlight before being gifted and used to wash each other’s face. Red ribbons tie the young hands that laugh at the words of some ancient rite, and the lived reality of this moment becomes a shoe - that is a weapon - which can be thrown into the works of modernity, sabotaging for a moment the linear paradigms that will reshape us into ‘individuals’ tomorrow.

Li Cull’&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="2394" height="1306" width_o="2394" height_o="1306" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/de2fb8c7e906b05e2b4f2e4b49a6ebb346a4f8739fb4b39777468e653415dc82/DAAS-SITE.jpg" data-mid="231720708" border="0" data-scale="46" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/de2fb8c7e906b05e2b4f2e4b49a6ebb346a4f8739fb4b39777468e653415dc82/DAAS-SITE.jpg" /&#62;

There is a field lying uncultivated in a neighborhood of the city of Pescara (IT), a place known in dialect as Li Cull’ - the hills. This field is the site. It belongs to a family of landowners who owned this land for longer than anybody can remember. Li Cull’ is a peripheral fraction of the provincial city of Pescara (IT). Interviewed by the press, locals refer to it as a place that has “lost its soul and identity”.
Over the past twenty years, ‘Pescara Colli’ transformed according to some locals on instagram into a kind of #colliwood. The neighborhood is no longer home to a strong rural community tied to its landscape. The edification boom that followed the 1980s miracolo economico italiano has ended, leaving behind the empty skeletons of unfinished residential buildings and rivers of terraced houses where ‘home’ is a brand of post-industrial ready mix made of IKEA tables and cement. My mother was born in colliwood the 15th of November 1963. In nine days, I will pack up my life and move back to Li Cull’, in one of the terraced houses that borders this field. I still know this field like I did as a kid, as the place of fantastical snakes and scary rustling noises reverberating across its all grasses.
I have learned to know it as others did, in the way that adults know everything, which is just gossip. I learned one day at Santa’s, over coffee, about how when the old man - the land owner - was still alive Minuccio had asked him why he kept the olives unpicked on their branches. To this, the old man is said to have answered that he did because la gente s’addà affamà (‘people need to be hungry’). I choose to know this site as someone who believes Santa and Minuccio’s story, so that their honesty, their humility, and the kindness with which they have been the centre of our hamlet’s communal life, becomes part of the field as I know it. The field is uncultivated, but not unkept. Twice a year, following the ingegnere’s call to the fire department, the heirs of the old man send someone to cut the grass so as to prevent fires. Then all goes again quiet. It is then that the others start to appear: the couple that walks the french bulldogs, the recovering heroine addict whose herb garden makes the grandmothers mutter, and the elderly gentleman carrying a plastic bag, who only shows up after rain showers. My mum says he is searching for snails as we watch him disappear in the new growth.

		<description>

Cross-Pollinations is an exhibition, public programme and digital heritage project established by a collaboration between Studio Imaginalis (Richard Weaver and Marta Pagliuca Pelacani), the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam, and VOX-POP.

Cross-Pollinations takes its inspiration from the multi-directional encounters and questions arising from the Petunia collection of Science Park. Through ‘archival imagination’, we seek to explode the collection beyond its scientific constraints, animating its archival matter so that it may live on in our imaginaries.
 *archival imagination is a tem coined by Prof. Gil Hochberg, for details see Becoming Palestine: Archival Imaginations for the Future (Duke University Press, 2022).

		<description>

The Artistic Research Knitting *Circle is a joint collaborative initiative by Marta Pagliuca Pelacani and Liza Prins.
The purpose of ARKC is to join the many threads that unite Amsterdam’s artistic research community, fostering a space of informal discussion and knowledgeable craft: something like a knitting club. Sitting together and learning with and from one another are important fundamentals of ARKC.
What we propose is a broad understanding of this way of coming together, one that spans across the many crafts comprising artistic research practices.

ARKC is open to everyone.
Sessions take place on the third Monday of the month, from 18.00 to 21.00. The programme consists of a total of 6 sessions.&#38;nbsp;
